A riot between Sport fans and private security guards generated a rush and panic in the visiting sector of Arena MRV, this Tuesday (30), during the first half of Atlético-MG’s victory against the Pernambuco team in the third phase of the Copa do Brazil.
The confusion allegedly started when an Atletico fan tried to steal a banner from a Sport organization. Members of Galoucura, Atlético’s main organization, tried to invade the visiting sector after the confusion.
The bar and bathroom area in the Sport fans’ section was vandalized, according to the Itatiaia report . The Military Police were called and used force and stun bombs to control the confusion.
With the confusion, families with children, women and elderly people panicked and moved to the sector’s partition, in an attempt to leave the place where the Sport organizers were . The Itatiaia report recorded the despair of these people, who were prevented from leaving the visitors’ area.
Thiago Henrique Mendonça Barbosa has lived in Belo Horizonte for 13 years and works in the logistics area. He was the only fan allowed to leave the visiting section, as he was with his son Arthur Henrique, aged one year and five months.
Born in Recife, Thiago is a Sport fan and went to Arena MRV with his son, wife, father and mother to watch his favorite team’s game. Defender Chico, from Sport, was the one who provided the tickets for the Pernambuco fans to watch the match in the capital of Minas Gerais.
After the confusion, security members collected pieces of broken chair. The idea is to prevent pieces of chairs from being used in possible fights outside the stadium.
Tense atmosphere also before the match
The Military Police avoided confusion between organized fans before the ball rolled at Arena MRV. According to Itatiaia , a group of Atlético-MG fans tried to invade the area designated for Sport fans on the outskirts of the stadium.
Atlético fans are rivals of the Sport organization, which in turn forms an alliance in Minas Gerais with Cruzeiro fans .
