Botafogo defeats Corinthians and takes provisional leadership of the Brasileirão
On the return of the Brazilian Championship after a stoppage due to the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Corinthians and Botafogo played a match without great emotions at the Neo Química Arena.
In the first half, both teams abused the throws in an attempt to surprise the opponent. Timão was looking for the young Wesley, while Glorioso was betting on the speed of Júnior Santos and Luiz Henrique.
Throughout the match, the Rio de Janeiro club was more dangerous, but could not take advantage of the opportunities they had. Corinthians, on the other hand, didn’t give goalkeeper John a hard time, and with little creativity, he couldn’t score either.
In the second half, Botafogo continued to improve and was rewarded. In the 13th minute, Júnior Santos completed a cross from Cuiabano and secured the victory for the visitors, 1-0.
The defenses of both teams stood out in the initial stage and the match between Corinthians and Botafogo remained without scoring chances until the 21st minute, when the Glorioso managed to trigger Luiz Henrique and the striker crossed to the head of Marlon Freitas, who appeared alone inside the Corinthians area, but ended up grazing the ball and heading it out.
At 27, Botafogo was dangerous again with Luiz Henrique. In another cross, Danilo Barbosa also did not take advantage of the chance to give Glorioso the lead on the scoreboard. In the first half, Timão did not press and relied on the brilliance of Wesley and Garro to try to bother, which did not happen.
The team from Rio de Janeiro came back better for the second half and the chances created resulted in a goal. In the 13th minute, Cuiabano provided a beautiful assist for Júnior Santos to score and put Botafogo in front.
Timão only threatened in the final stretch of the game. In the 40th minute, Yuri Alberto was called into action and hit goalkeeper John’s post. Three minutes later, Romero came out in front of goal, but finished poorly. The flashes of creativity from the hosts were not enough to seek the equalizer, Botafogo 1-0.
With the result, the Glorioso took the provisional lead of the Brasileirão with 13 points.
In the next round of the Brazilian Championship, Corinthians faces Atlético-GO, away from home. The match takes place on June 11 (Tuesday), at 7 pm (Brasília), at the Antônio Accioly stadium, in Goiânia.
On the same day, Botafogo will have the Rio de Janeiro derby against Fluminense, at 8 pm (Brasília), at Maracanã.
