Who is Francisco Conceição, Portugal’s hero in their European Championship debut

Scorer of Portugal’s second goal, a minute after entering the field, Francisco Conceição had a heroic night in Leipzig . He found the net in the 46th minute of the second half and guaranteed the Portuguese victory over the Czech Republic 2-1, in their debut in the European Championship.

Created by Porto, the 21-year-old winger had an outstanding 2023-24 season for the club, scoring eight goals and six assists. In the current season, Francisco Conceição was voted the second best dribbler in the world , behind only the Belgian Doku, from Manchester City.

Brief spell at Ajax

After a good start to his career at Porto, the athlete had a spell in Dutch football, where he played for Ajax between July 2022 and September 2023. Conceição returned to the Portuguese club on loan, had convincing performances, and was repurchased, having signed a contract with the Porto club until 2029.

For the Portuguese national team, the young man debuted in March this year , in a defeat against Slovenia. In the preparatory friendly for the 2024 Euro Cup , he was one of the highlights in the 4-2 victory over Finland, providing two assists.

Father and son enter Euro history

Francisco Conceição is 21 years old and is the son of Sérgio Conceição, a former player who made his mark in Portugal , playing in the 2002 World Cup, and former coach of Porto between 2017 and 2024. With his father scoring at Euro 2000, the Conceição family is the second to score goals in the competition.

Federico and Enrico Chiesa, from Italy, formed the first father-son duo to swing at the European Championship. Federico scored in the 2020 edition, while his father scored in 1996.
