Why are the fields smaller in Copa América games?
One factor has caught the attention of players and fans who are watching the Copa América : the small size of the field. The competition, which is being held in the USA this year, will be within the limits of the dimensions required by FIFA.
Conmebol defined that the Copa América pitches will be 100 meters long by 64 meters wide. Compared to the world’s major tournaments, which use 105m by 68m, the US fields will be five meters shorter and four meters narrower .
Smaller dimensions are the NFL’s “fault”
In this edition, 14 stadiums will be used until July 4th, the day of the final. As 11 arenas host NFL games, Conmebol had to adapt them to host football matches , since most of these venues do not have space for expansion.
The dimensions of a field that hosts American football in the United States is 109.75m x 48.75m.
Despite their small size, the pitches follow the minimum standards of FIFA , the entity that governs world football. For official games, fields must be between 100m and 110m long and 64m and 75m wide.
